OSPF LSA TYPES

OSPF LSA TYPES: (total 11 LSA - we are using only 1 to 5 and 7).

ROUTER LSA  -  type 1

NETWORK LSA - type 2

SUMMARY LSA - type 3

SUMMARY LSA  type - 4

( TYPE 3 LSA with SEND INFORMATION ABOUT WHICH IS ASBR TO ALL ROUTERS WITH THE SAME AS) 

AUTONOMOUS SYSTEM EXTERNAL LSA - Type 5

MULTICAST LSA - Type 6

ROUTER LSA  -  type 1

Advertised from one router to another router with in the AREA (any area - area o or      

area 1 but with in the area) we called as router LSA.

Normal advertisement.

O routes.

NETWORK LSA  -  type 2

Advertised from DR to other OSPF routers with in the AREA (any area - area o or area 1 

but with in the area) we called as network LSA.

Broadcast multi access or non-broadcast multi access network only DR and BDR election 

will happen.

Similar to type 1 LSA but small different advertisement from DR to other routers.

O routes.

SUMMARY LSA - type 3

Generate by ABR (Area Boarder Router).

Advertised between two areas ( in ABR). Each area have type 1 LSA and type 2 LSA. 

Any two AREA Exchange the LSA.

OIA - routes - inter area routes.

SUMMARY LSA - type 4

Generate by ABR (Area Boarder Router).

Provide the information about ASBR (which 

router is ASBR with router id of ASBR, send this information to all routers  with in the AS).

Note:

Similar to type 3 along with ASBR information (which router is ASBR, ASBR router id ).

AUTONOMOUS SYSTEM EXTERNAL LSA - Type 5

Generated by ASBR (Autonomous system boarder router).

External routes learning from the other dynamic routing protocol like EIGRP or RIP and 

Redistribute with OSPF routers.  Its will exchange this type of LSA we called AS external 

LSA.

OE1/OE2 - External routes.

MULTICAST LSA - Type 6

Not in USE.
